Henry Schroeder founded it on Market Street in 1893. After the 1906 earthquake it reopened on Front Street and has been at 240 Front since the 1950s.

Why it matters

Henry Schroeder founded Schroeder's on Market Street in 1893. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed it, and he reopened on Front Street during the rebuilding of downtown. It moved to 111 Front Street in 1916 and later to 240 Front. Max Kniesche, the second owner, ran it through Prohibition. It was a men-only hall until it opened to women in the 1970s.

Andy Chun and Jan Wiginton, who also run the Press Club, took over in 2014 when the previous operators retired. It was closed for a four-month renovation and reopened in May 2014 with a new German menu.
