Opened in 1886 at 432 Broadway. It has moved several times since, and has been in the San Remo Hotel on Mason Street since 2005.

Why it matters

Angelo Del Monte opened Fior d'Italia in 1886 at 432 Broadway, during North Beach's Barbary Coast days. The first building burned in 1893. The next one was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the restaurant reopened in a tent within a week.

After several more moves it spent about fifty years on Union Street facing Washington Square, from 1954 until a 2005 fire. It then moved into the ground floor of the San Remo Hotel at 2237 Mason Street.

It closed in May 2012 for financial reasons. Longtime executive chef Gianni Audieri and his wife Trudy bought it and reopened it in December 2012. Audieri died in July 2023.
