Opened as a bakery in 1911 and added a poor boy shop in 1929. It closed in 1993 and was later reopened by Jay Nix.

Why it matters

German baker Charles Goering Sr. opened Parkway Bakery at Hagan Avenue and Toulouse Street in 1911. Henry Timothy Sr. bought it in 1922. In 1929, the year of the streetcar strike, he added a poor boy shop. A 1978 flood destroyed the brick ovens, and Parkway began buying its bread from Leidenheimer.

The Timothy brothers closed it in 1993. Neighbor Jay Nix bought Parkway in 1995 for $45,000 and later reopened it. Nix and his nephew Justin Kennedy run it today. It is known for roast beef and fried shrimp poor boys.
