Why it matters

Joe Casamento, an immigrant from the Italian island of Ustica, opened the restaurant in 1919. In 1949 he tiled the walls, inside and out, with so much tile that he had to source it from four suppliers. Saveur reports that the summer closing began after that renovation, and the restaurant still closes every June, July and August.

Casamento's grandson CJ Gerdes owns it with his wife Linda. The menu of oysters, gumbo and the oyster loaf has hardly changed, and the restaurant celebrated its 100th year in 2019.
