Opened in the French Quarter in 1905 by Angelo Brocato, a Sicilian immigrant. The family later moved the shop to Mid-City.

Why it matters

Angelo Brocato, an immigrant from Cefalù, Sicily, opened his ice cream shop in the French Quarter in 1905, when it was an Italian neighborhood. After almost 80 years there, the family moved it to North Carrollton Avenue in Mid-City.

Katrina put four feet of floodwater in the shop, and it stayed shut for thirteen months before reopening on September 23, 2006. Arthur Brocato, the founder's grandson, runs it with his family.
