Why it matters

Henri Lenoir, a Swiss immigrant and art lover, opened Vesuvio in 1948 as a bohemian meeting place for artists. It sits in a 1913 Italian Renaissance Revival building on Columbus Avenue, across the alley from City Lights Bookstore.

Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady and Lawrence Ferlinghetti drank there. In 1960 Kerouac stayed at Vesuvio instead of making a planned meeting with Henry Miller in Big Sur. The alley beside it is now Jack Kerouac Alley.

Lenoir ran the bar until the late 1980s, when it was sold to the Fein family. Janet Clyde, who started as a morning bartender in 1979, became a co-owner with the Fein family. The owners also own the building.
