Why it matters
Arnaud Cazenave, a French wine salesman, founded Arnaud's in 1918. He put much of the restaurant's earnings into buying one adjoining property after another, until its 11 buildings covered most of the block.
After 30 years he passed it to his daughter, Germaine C. Wells. Archie and Jane Casbarian took over in 1978, and their children Katy and Archie now run it with Jane. The restaurant says it has had only two owning families.
Today it includes the main dining room, the Jazz Bistro, the French 75 Bar, which won a James Beard Foundation Award in 2017, and a Mardi Gras museum.
