Opened on New Year's Day 1947 as Wally's Paradise at 428 Massachusetts Avenue. The family reopened it across the street at number 427 in 1979.

Why it matters

Joseph "Wally" Walcott, who came to Boston from Barbados, opened Wally's Paradise at 428 Massachusetts Avenue on New Year's Day 1947. The official site and Boston Magazine describe it as the first nightclub in New England owned by a Black man. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon are among the musicians who played there.

The city took the original building by eminent domain in 1978, and the family reopened the club across the street at number 427 in 1979. From the 1960s the club put conservatory students on stage alongside veterans, which it still does.

After Walcott died in 1998 at 101, his daughter Elynor and his grandsons Paul, Frank and Lloyd Poindexter took over. The family still runs it.
